Last weekend, we had the amazing opportunity to do Last weekend, we had the amazing opportunity to do a volunteer day at Ka Papa Loโ€™i O Kฤnewai located on the UH Mฤnoa campus. This was organized through Buddy's work (hence the matching tshirts), but they have an open volunteer day on the first Saturday of each month and I highly recommend it! We learned so much about the importance of kalo (also known as taro) to the Hawaiian people - we knew it was a critical food source (including being used to make poi) but didn't know there was so much spiritual meaning as well. Then we got to help in the muddy Lo'i - spreading leaves with our feet to help fertilize for the next planting and piling mud on top of the already planted kalo so it gets enough moisture. It was so messy, meaningful, and marvelous! ๐Ÿ˜„ Getting to learn about their local waterways was also very impactful and moving since water rights are such a huge issue in Hawaii and worldwide. Water (wai) is sacred to Hawaiians and they don't believe anyone can own it (seems like an obvious point, but it's a big issue!). Farmers could divert some water, but it was against their laws in ancient times to dam up a stream to take all the water for yourself. Our guide said the punishment was death and the bones of the offender would be added to the stones of the stream as a warning to others. ๐Ÿ˜ณ While I don't think that level of punishment is needed these days, I do hope better laws are put in place to protect the land and it's people! ๐Ÿ™ I truly believe this is an experience every visitor and any transplants to Hawaii should be required to have. Growing up outside of Hawaii, we were extremely naive and uninformed when we moved here. However, we're trying to learn and have gained so much respect for the land and people here, but this experience gave a new depth to that! ๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿ™Œ (P.s. to local friends - if I explained something incorrectly above, please message me and I'll correct it!)
Happy Aloha Friday! If you are on Kauai, we highly Happy Aloha Friday! If you are on Kauai, we highly recommend planning a mid-day happy hour with @kauairumsafaris on their awesome tour featuring farm-to-glass cocktails spiked with yummy local @koloarum. If you are lucky, @the_rum_guys will have a new concoction to share with you at one of the stops! This is a great adults-only activity and the perfect little date day. We went after paddling and hiking to Secret Falls, so the drinks hit a little extra hard haha The two tours made for the perfect day trip to beautiful #kauaihawaii though! Oh Tangier. This is one of our absolute faves! ๐Ÿคฉ Six hours is not nearly enough time in Morocco, but it's enough to give you a taste of this amazing country and super easy to plan while visiting Spain! If you ever get a chance to swim under a waterfall If you ever get a chance to swim under a waterfall, don't pass it up. Pure joy. Still playing catch up from our little day trip to #Kauai on Monday (and the recovery day Tuesday haha), but I'd happily be extra busy every week for more getaway days like that! Here's to way more adventure time! #secretfalls #kauaitravel #wailuariver #secretfallskauai #hawaiiadventures #chasingwaterfalls #kauaifun
Getting to swim under this epic waterfall was tota Getting to swim under this epic waterfall was totally worth the 5a.m. wakeup, 4 miles round trip of paddling, and two miles of hiking (including a river crossing and lots of mud!) Island hop adventure days are my fave. If you are headed to #Kauai make sure to get out on #WailuaRiver and go see #secretfalls! It's a trek, but so amazing!!! #secretfallskauai #hawaiiwaterfall
For a long time, adventure days together were the For a long time, adventure days together were the norm. It was rare to go a week without exploring a new place. Giving that up to settle back into "normal" life after traveling for so long has been really challenging for me. It was the right decision for many reasons, but I miss that lifestyle all the time. I know we have so much beauty here in our chosen home, but my brain doesn't feel motivated without a time limit to enjoy a place and the hustle culture in the U.S. just leaves me wanting to nap most days. ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ (I've been working on that, but I admittedly do not make the most of my days right now. ๐Ÿฅด) BUT today's day trip to Kauai for an epic adventure-packed 12 hours let us put back on our wanderer shoes for a day and just be free of responsibilities and it was the best. Also a good reminder that we can still have that freedom we love, it just takes a tad more planning and self-motivation now. ๐Ÿ˜… So grateful for a hubby who still says yes to my ridiculous plans that leave us totally exhausted. ๐Ÿฅฐ Today was so abundant! (More pics after sleep! ๐Ÿ˜ด)
Last weekend, we went to see the Waikiki Friday ni Last weekend, we went to see the Waikiki Friday night fireworks and got poured on! You can see the gloom cloud coming in this pic. It ended up being hilarious as our group of friends tried (and ultimately failed) to take cover. But the clouds cleared in time for the show to still go on, which we happily watched soaking wet. ๐Ÿ™‚ I really freaking love summer evenings in Hawaii...
